Australia: Murder an honour killing, court told

Australia - THE murder of a man who worked at the Malaysian consulate in Sydney was an honour killing carried out by the family of a woman with whom he was having an affair, a court has heard.  Mohd Shah Saemin was beaten and stabbed to death on a street in Leichhardt in February last year, allegedly in front of witnesses. Yesterday the NSW Supreme Court heard that the murder was carried out by the son and husband of Nita Iskandar, a fellow consulate worker. Ms Iskandar's son, Andrew Iskandar is on trial for murder and soliciting a murder, while Ms Iskandar is accused of accessory to murder after the fact. Both mother and son have pleaded not guilty. Her husband is yet to face trial and cannot be named. The court heard that a romantic relationship developed between Mr Saemin and Ms Iskandar in 2008, and it soon became a talking point within Sydney's Indonesian community. The court heard that when they became aware of the affair, Andrew Iskandar and his father began planning Mr Saemin's murder to protect family honour. On the night of February 21 the pair were allegedly waiting in a car when Mr Saemin arrived home.
